Frequently Asked Questions

Every man attends free. Wild Breath is funded entirely by donations. Learn more or give.

Who are these retreats for?
Wild Breath retreats are designed for adult men seeking personal growth, leadership development, resilience-building, and authentic community connection through wilderness experiences. Participants come from diverse backgrounds and life situations. No prior outdoor experience is required, though a willingness to engage with nature and group reflection is essential.
Where are retreats held?
Retreats take place in the Eastern Sierra region of California, using designated campsites and wilderness areas within Inyo National Forest and nearby public lands. We obtain all necessary permits and comply with local regulations to ensure legal and responsible use of these public resources.
What does it cost to attend?
Nothing. Every man attends a Wild Breath retreat free — there is no fee, no deposit, and no sliding scale. Food, group gear, permits, and shared logistics are all covered before you arrive. You are responsible only for your own personal items, such as a sleeping bag, clothing, and boots, and for getting yourself to the meeting point (we help coordinate carpools).
How are programs funded?
Wild Breath is funded 100% by generous donations and grants — never by participant fees. We run on a pay-it-forward model: men who have been on a retreat give back so the next crew can go. Every dollar covers permits, food, equipment, safety gear, and facilitator support, and all of it serves our charitable and educational mission.
Are donations restricted?
Wild Breath is a registered 501(c)(3) public charity recognized by the Internal Revenue Service. All donations directly support our mission to equip men through structured outdoor retreats and mentorship experiences. All gifts support Wild Breath's mission at the organization's discretion for charitable purposes.
Do you endorse candidates or lobby?
No. Wild Breath does not participate in or intervene in political campaigns on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for public office. We also do not engage in lobbying as a substantial part of our activities. Our focus is solely on charitable and educational programs.
Who owns the Wild Breath logo?
The Wild Breath name and logo are the exclusive property of the organization, used solely for charitable program identification. They are not licensed, sold, or available for commercial use. All intellectual property is maintained for organizational purposes consistent with our nonprofit status.
Do I need outdoor experience to participate?
No prior wilderness experience is required. Our facilitators provide instruction in essential outdoor skills and ensure all participants are prepared for the environment. You should have a baseline level of physical fitness for hiking and camping, but we adapt activities to accommodate varying abilities.
Is this therapy or counseling?
No. Wild Breath retreats are educational personal-development experiences, not clinical or medical services. While participants often find the experience meaningful and growth-oriented, we do not provide therapy, counseling, or treatment for mental health conditions. Anyone with health concerns should consult their healthcare provider before participating.
How do you ensure participant safety?
Safety is our top priority. We employ trained facilitators with wilderness first aid certification, maintain emergency communication capabilities, follow Leave No Trace principles, monitor weather conditions, and have protocols for medical emergencies. All participants receive pre-trip briefings covering safety procedures. See our Safety page for complete details.
What should I bring?
You'll receive a detailed packing list after registering. Essential items include appropriate clothing for variable mountain weather, sleeping bag and pad, personal toiletries, water bottles, and any personal medications. We provide group camping gear, food, and cooking equipment. Equipment loans or rentals may be available for items you don't own.
What if I need to cancel?
Let us know as soon as you can. Because retreats are free, there is nothing to refund — but spots are limited and every crew is small, so an early heads-up lets us offer your place to a man on the waitlist. Retreats themselves may be postponed or canceled due to weather, permit issues, or safety concerns, in which case we will work with you to get you on a future trip.
